ABOUT MAY MARTINEZ

Hi my name is May. I am a certified life coach and freelance writer with a strong desire to help protect the environment and promote wellness. This is my story.

I grew up in a household of animal and nature lovers. My family went on sabbatical trips to South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica and other places that expanded our minds and kindled a love for nature in our hearts.

After high school, I decided to pursue training in the environmental sciences. I wanted to know more about how nature works and contribute to protecting our environment. I got a Bachelors of Environmental Science Degree from Acadia University and a Masters Degree in Environmental Studies. I published two peer-reviewed journal articles about my thesis work on mercury in dragonflies and community-based water monitoring.

During my studies, I developed a keen interest in environmental education and the social causes of environmental degradation and climate change. I worked for two environmental non-profit organisations as a project coordinator in the climate change field and led numerous projects including a coastal photography workshop, rain barrel building workshop, rain garden design, green energy monitor installation, and a 2 day Eco Connects NS event that brought together First Nations organisations, environmental non-profits, and government.

I took a break from full-time work and travelled to Colombia and Europe. I followed my new passion and volunteered on permaculture and organic farms. I also became very interested in the potential of social enterprises to make real social impact.

When I returned home to Nova Scotia, I was a changed person. I had discovered a strong faith in God and was actively hearing voices. I ended up in the mental health ward of the hospital twice over the course of two years and maintained a belief that one of the voices I heard was from God.

It has been over one year since the second hospital visit. I married my soulmate and moved into an apartment in Digby, Nova Scotia. I joined a self employment program called Go 3D for people with disabilities. It has been an essential part of my recovery as I found renewed hope for following my dreams. I felt called to start a life coaching and freelance writing business so that I could maintain flexible hours and nourish my own mental health. I hope the business grows and flourishes so that I can help people to promote wellness, environmental protection, and our connection to nature!
